Zimbabwe - When to Visit

When to Visit Zimbabwe

Climate guide & best times to travel

Zimbabwe has a pleasant subtropical climate with three distinct seasons that make trip planning fairly straightforward. The country experiences a rainy season from November to March, characterized by hot, humid conditions with afternoon thunderstorms that can be quite dramatic. April to August brings the cool, dry season—honestly the most comfortable time to visit—with clear skies, minimal rainfall, and temperatures that drop significantly at night, especially in higher elevations. From September to October, you'll encounter the hot, dry season where temperatures climb steadily and the landscape takes on a golden, parched quality before the rains return. What's interesting about Zimbabwe's climate is how the altitude moderates what would otherwise be quite intense heat. Most of the country sits on a high plateau around 1,200 meters above sea level, which keeps things more temperate than you'd expect for a landlocked southern African nation. The Eastern Highlands tend to be cooler and wetter year-round, while the low-lying Zambezi Valley can get genuinely hot and sticky. Worth noting that the rainy season doesn't mean constant downpours—it's more about intense afternoon storms that clear up, leaving everything lush and green.

Best Time to Visit

Beach & Relaxation
Zimbabwe is landlocked, but for lakeside relaxation at Kariba, May to October offers the best weather with clear skies and comfortable temperatures perfect for lounging by the water.
Cultural Exploration
April to September works well for exploring Great Zimbabwe ruins and cultural sites, as the dry weather makes travel easier and the cooler temperatures are more comfortable for walking tours.
Adventure & Hiking
May to August is ideal for hiking in the Eastern Highlands and adventure activities, with cool, dry conditions and excellent visibility, though you'll want warm layers for early mornings.
Budget Travel
January to March (excluding Christmas/New Year) tends to be the low season with better deals on accommodation, though you'll need to contend with rain and some lodges close during this period.

What to Pack

Year-Round Essentials

High SPF sunscreen
The high altitude means UV radiation is intense year-round, even on cloudy days during the rainy season.
Insect repellent with DEET
Mosquitoes are present throughout the year, particularly in low-lying areas like Kariba and the Zambezi Valley.
Comfortable walking shoes
You'll be doing a fair amount of walking whether exploring ruins, cities, or national parks.
Wide-brimmed hat
Essential sun protection for safari drives and outdoor activities across all seasons.
Reusable water bottle
Staying hydrated is crucial in Zimbabwe's climate, and tap water in major cities is generally safe to drink.
Binoculars
Wildlife and bird watching opportunities are excellent, and you'll get much more out of safaris with decent optics.
Power bank
Power outages are fairly common, so keeping your devices charged independently is practical.

Summer/Rainy Season (Nov-Mar)

Clothing
Lightweight, quick-dry shirts and pants, Rain jacket or poncho, Shorts and t-shirts for hot days
Footwear
Waterproof hiking boots or sandals that can handle wet conditions
Accessories

Light layers only—it's warm and humid, though a light jacket might be useful for air-conditioned spaces.

Autumn/Early Dry Season (Apr-May)

Clothing
Long-sleeved shirts for cooler evenings, Light pants and shorts, Fleece or light sweater
Footwear
Comfortable walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots
Accessories
Light scarf for cool mornings, Sunglasses

Warm fleece or jacket for morning game drives, Long pants and long-sleeved shirts, Thermal underlayers for early mornings
Footwear
Closed-toe shoes and warm socks for cold mornings

Lightweight, breathable fabrics in neutral colors, Long-sleeved shirts for sun protection, Light pants for safari
Footwear
Breathable walking shoes or hiking boots
Accessories
Cooling towel, Extra sunscreen, Lip balm with SPF

Plug Type
Type D and Type G (British-style three-pin)
