Zimbabwe sits where southern Africa's two climate forces collide: subtropical sun and the elevation of its central plateau, averaging somewhere around 1,200 to 1,500 metres above sea level. That altitude explains why Zimbabwe's weather feels more manageable than expected for a country this close to the equator. Days stay warm rather than scorching through most of the year. Nights turn cool. The pattern splits cleanly into two seasons that shape every aspect of travel here. The wet season runs roughly from November through March, peaking in January when monthly rainfall can reach around 282mm. Heavy afternoon thunderstorms build through the day, dump their load, then often clear by evening. Humidity sits around 70% year-round, but during the wet months the air thickens. The landscape responds dramatically. The bush turns green almost overnight. Rivers run fast and full. Wildlife disperses across the newly watered savannah. Zimbabwe in full wet-season green is a different country from its dry-season self. From May through September, the rains essentially stop. June and July typically see around 3mm each, close enough to zero that you can plan around dry skies. The temperature range widens considerably. Days in July might reach 21°C (70°F), but nights drop to around 5°C (41°F). Pack a real jacket if you are sleeping under canvas near Victoria Falls. October brings change. Rainfall ticks up again. Temperatures push toward their annual peak at 28°C (82°F). The dry bush takes on a brittle, end-of-season quality before the first serious rains arrive.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Beach
Zimbabwe's highland resorts and lake destinations like Kariba work well from May through August. The dry, cooler air keeps conditions comfortable. Nights are refreshing rather than cold enough to be a nuisance.
Cultural
The May-to-August window also suits visits to Harare, Bulawayo, and the Great Zimbabwe ruins. Reliable sunshine and manageable daytime temperatures make walking and sightseeing feel effortless rather than draining.
Adventure
June through September hits the sweet spot. The Matobo Hills, Nyanga National Park, and Zimbabwe's Eastern Highlands are at their clearest and most accessible. Paths stay dry. Wet-season growth does not obstruct them.
Budget
November through March brings the wet season. This means lower accommodation rates, fewer crowds, and some operators offering off-peak pricing. The trade-off is afternoon showers and the occasional day of sustained heavy rain. For travellers willing to work around the weather, Zimbabwe rewards them with a lush, uncrowded version of the country.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Zimbabwe.

Year-Round Essentials
High-factor sunscreen
The combination of altitude and southern African latitude means UV exposure is significant even on overcast days. Many visitors underestimate this badly.
A reusable water bottle
Makes practical sense for anyone venturing beyond city hotels.
Insect repellent containing DEET
Worth carrying regardless of season, as mosquitoes are present year-round in lower-lying areas and active during the wet months.
A wide-brimmed hat
Pulls double duty. Sun protection during the day. Light cover during brief wet-season showers.
Good-quality binoculars
Worth the luggage space. Any chance of visiting Zimbabwe's national parks means wildlife distances reward the effort.
Dry season (May through October)
Clothing
Lightweight, breathable clothing, A warm fleece or light down jacket
Footwear
Closed-toe shoes or boots
Layering Tip
Lightweight clothing for afternoons. Warm layers for evenings and early mornings. Pack both.
Wet season (November through April)
Clothing
Quick-dry fabrics
Footwear
Footwear with grip
Accessories
A packable waterproof jacket or rain poncho
Plug Type
Type G (standard British three-pin configuration)
Voltage
230 volts
Adapter Note
Travellers from North America need a plug adapter and voltage converter for devices not rated dual voltage. Most modern electronics handle 100-240V automatically. Check hair dryers, travel irons, older chargers first. Do not assume.
Skip These Items
Very dark-coloured clothing in blue or black attracts tsetse flies in wildlife areas. Avoid it. High heels and platform shoes have almost no use case in Zimbabwe beyond hotel functions. Dead weight on active itineraries. Leave them. Expensive jewellery you would worry about in camp settings or on walking safaris is better left behind. Entirely. Single-use plastic bags are restricted under Zimbabwean regulations. Pack reusable alternatives. Saves problems at the border. A travel hairdryer is almost universally supplied by Zimbabwe's accommodation. Easy item to drop from your bag before you zip it up.
