Climate conditions and crowd levels for each month of the year.
Zimbabwe deep in its wet season brings daytime highs of around 26°C (79°F) and lows of 15°C (60°F). Warm, humid days get regularly interrupted by afternoon thunderstorms. They can be dramatic.
Conditions remain similar to January, with highs around 25°C (78°F) and lows of 15°C (60°F). Zimbabwe's bush is at its most intensely green at this time of year. Wildlife watching is harder than in the dry season. The reward is young animals and excellent birdlife.
March sits in the tail of the wet season, with rainfall easing slightly. Mornings often clear first. Storms arrive later in the afternoon. Early starts are worthwhile.
April marks the point where the rains retreat noticeably, and the shift is palpable. The air dries out. Skies clear for longer stretches. The countryside retains its wet-season green while losing the oppressive humidity.
May brings Zimbabwe's dry season fully established. The bush begins to thin and dry. Wildlife becomes easier to spot. Animals are less able to hide.
June is the heart of Zimbabwe's winter, with daytime highs of 21°C (70°F) that feel pleasant in full sunshine but noticeably cool once the sun drops. Nights mean a proper warm layer is not optional.
July is the coolest month of the year in Zimbabwe, with lows around 5°C (41°F) that can feel biting when combined with early morning game drives in an open vehicle. The low humidity and reliably clear skies make it comfortable once the sun is up.
August brings a slow warmth back into the air. Zimbabwe's dry-season wildlife viewing reaches its peak through this month as water sources shrink and animals concentrate around rivers and waterholes, sometimes in notable numbers.
September sees a marked warming trend, with highs pushing to 26°C (80°F) and the landscape taking on a parched, golden quality. The Zambezi River downstream of Victoria Falls reaches dramatic low-water levels this month, creating powerful, close-up viewing of the falls from the Zimbabwean side.
October is the hottest month in Zimbabwe's annual cycle. The bush is at its driest and most open. Wildlife watching remains excellent. The heat through the middle of the day becomes significant. Early starts and late afternoon activity make far more sense than pushing through midday.
November sees the wet season return properly, with rainfall distributed across the month in regular afternoon storms. Zimbabwe's landscape begins its transformation back toward green. The combination of cleared air after rain and low tourist numbers creates appealing conditions for those willing to plan around the weather.
December brings full wet season conditions. There is a short uptick in visitor numbers over the holiday period. But this month is otherwise low season in Zimbabwe. The waterfalls are building toward their peak flow. The birding is excellent. The countryside is lush. Expect afternoon disruptions to outdoor plans. The mornings tend to deliver.
